Rum has a rich tradition across the world, with any sugar cane producing country able to make it. Originally thought to have come from the West Indies, the empire building world brought it across the globe. With massive success in the Caribbean Rum is on the up with new and distinct options.
Calves leather and caramel. Hints of cinnamon and dried coconut, a little vanilla too. Dried banana develops. Surprisingly sweet palate entry, with molasses and hints of leather to the fore, alongside orange rind and salted butter.
Intense, it starts on molasses, pear and varnish. It then becomes fruitier and spicier on apple, banana and gooseberry, also nutmeg and vanilla with a hint of smoke. Rich and round, it follows the nose with vanilla fudge, honey, ginger and fruity notes of prune and coconut.
Hints of black peppercorn, clove, cinnamon, baked cherry, prune, molasses; later sniffs encounter forest, leaves, black tea, dry stone. Entry is fruity with white raisins, dried pineapple, and is off-dry. midpalate is spicy, piquant, minerally, and significantly drier than the entry stage.
A rich and delicious bouquet, accented by smoky notes and aromas of tropical fruit, pineapple, citrus peel, and a touch of clove. The palate opens with a structured, pleasant sensation of ripe banana, pineapple, and spices layered in a smoky finish.
Dry, with a more floral and fruitier profile of rose water, soursop, pear, white grape, apricot and sugar-apple. Next some coconut milk, balsam, allspices, bread and nuts emerge.
It has notes of ripe bananas and baking spices on the nose. This is followed by buttered banana bread. It has a smooth and rich taste. Its the perfect way to enjoy one of the Caribbeans best loved flavours and bring the tropics home to your taste buds.
Good helpings of thick, rich caramel and sweet fruits - think orange segments and dried cherry. Quite nutty at first, though the fruit notes swiftly return (more tropical than before). Burnt sugar and a touch of banana.
Clean and elegant with subtle leafy, grassy notes and tropical fruit. Quite light, with some cooking spice warmth to it. Still rather grassy and herbal. Sweet on the finish, with some warmth remaining.
Vanilla and rich notes of butterscotch, molasses and chocolate. More of those banana sweet notes. Hints of Calvados, surprisingly... Finish Long, fruity finish with caramel and nuts.
Thick and rich, massive spice notes carrying forth suggestions of dark fruit, prune, plum wine, vanilla, cedar, unlit cigars, calves leather and musty orange peel. Long finish and very warming with notes of caramel and pepper on the tail.
Deep, rich, golden amber. Fresh tropical notes, with touches of sweet honeycomb and spice. Zesty pineapple, toasted coconut & ripe guava notes with hints of vanilla, cardamom & nutmeg. Long, welcoming and very well balanced
Warming cinnamon and oak notes, with sweet toffee and brown sugar, and a touch of sea salt gives the rum a distinctivesalty-sweet flavour - think salted caramel or sweet-salt popcorn.
The palate offers notes of freshly-cut-grass, juniper berries, mint, jasmine and sweet herbs, that build into a lingering finish of cedar and liquorice.
Velho Barreiro is a traditionally made cachasa and one of the big names in Brazil. This release has an incredibly light, easy-going nature. Fiery and fresh cane sugar on the nose, sweet and complex to taste, with a peppery kick on the finish.

Considering that Wray is 126 proof, it is not advisable to drink this straight, though many are not deterred. After adding a dash of water, bold flavors of clove, caramelized bananas, candied walnuts, grilled pineapple, and hogo dominate your palate and transport you to the islands of Jamaica.
